What Does Placental Abruption Mean?

Transcript:

Hey, Brian, what does the term placental abruption mean? Placental abruption? Well, a placental abruption is when the placenta, which is an organ that develops inside the uterus during pregnancy, when that placenta pulls away from the inner wall of the uterus in the placenta, is responsible for getting nutrients, oxygen, blood and so forth to the baby from the mother. So if the placenta pulls away from the uterus, you can have significant bleeding. And as a result, first of all, the mother can experience significant bleeding and serious injury and then the baby may not get enough oxygen to its brain. And so oftentimes you have to have an expedited delivery. When that happens, you have to get the baby out very quickly, usually by caesarean section before the baby suffers brain damage. So if a physician or nursing staff doesn't react quickly enough to signs and symptoms of placental abruption, both the mother and the baby can have serious permanent injury. And unfortunately, at the Eisen Law Firm, we've seen several cases where there was a delay in diagnosing placental abruption as a result of which both babies and mothers have been seriously and permanently injured. That's sort of a placental abruption in a nutshell.
